Job Description Summary

The Epidemiology Program Specialist, under general supervision, performs statistical analysis using data from TVMDL’s laboratory information management system (LIMS), providing epidemiological services to internal and external stakeholders. Primary duties include development and maintenance of epidemiology dashboards, preparing scientific and public information write-ups, and assisting veterinary diagnosticians and other professional staff with ad hoc epidemiological analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Informatics & Epidemiology Program Director in the Veterinary Services section and works collaboratively with other professional staff to answer epidemiological questions using diagnostic laboratory data.

  • Assists with identifying and monitoring trends in infectious diseases and their impact on animal health. This includes estimating prevalence, identifying/mapping disease in geographic regions, and exploring potential risk factors.

  • Prepares data analyses and visualizations for internal use and for publication to TVMDL clients, stakeholders, and the veterinary industry.

  • Annotates TVMDL’s test catalog database with associated syndromic data for use in a diagnostic testing recommendation tool.

  • May review and cleanup taxonomy data in TVMDL’s laboratory information management system (LIMS), including annotation with SNOMED codes where available.

  • Ad hoc query and analysis of epidemiological data from TVMDL’s LIMS database.

  • Development and maintenance of epidemiology dashboards for internal and external use.

  • Prepares epidemiological data for write-ups on TVMDL’s website and other non-peer reviewed publications.

  • May contribute to scholarly articles, peer-reviewed publications, and scientific presentations.

 Other Duties

  • Adheres and conforms to quality assurance and safety programs and procedures. Assists in identifying incidents of non-conformance and noncompliance. Actively participates in quality assurance and safety programs.

  • Fosters teamwork, cooperation, professional standards, and communication. Participates in cross training with fellow staff.

  • Work shall be performed with adherence to federal, state, Texas A&M University System, and TVMDL safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Performs work in such a way as to not expose others or oneself to hazards that are avoidable by reasonable and approved methods. 

  • Occasional in-state travel is required. Operates assigned equipment in a safe manner and in adherence to all TAMUS, AgriLife, and TVMDL policies as well as local, state, and federal laws.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Position Details

  • This position is eligible for a partially remote work arrangement for up to 16 hours per week. The incumbent may may choose to participate in flex scheduling including work prior to 8 AM or after 5 PM.

  • TVMDL is located on the campus of Texas A&M University (TAMU). Parking permits are available from TAMU at the expense of the employee.

  • TVMDL is considered an essential component of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) and remains operational for several “open holidays” in which overtime or compensatory time may be earned.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills.

  • Maintains attention to detail and utilizes sound judgment.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in veterinary medicine, agriculture, animal science, epidemiology, healthcare, or related field.

  • Experience working with veterinary diagnostic laboratory data.

  • Experience documenting, troubleshooting, and/or streamlining existing processes.

  • Experience with MySQL, Power BI, ArcGIS, and/or Stata.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of epidemiological concepts and methods.

  • Ability to engage with end users to identify and analyze needs and provide epidemiological services.

  • Ability to write/present findings for technical and nontechnical audiences.

Required Registrations, Certifications, Licenses:

  • Must have a valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
