Epidemiologist III – Viral Vaccine-Preventable Disease Programs

Work Type: Epidemiological support services (surveillance, analytics, studies, publications, and outbreak response support)

Work Schedule / Core Support Hours: Monday–Friday / 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM 

Travel Requirements: Travel for outbreak response / special studies / routine travel

Role Summary

The Epidemiologist III provides epidemiologic and analytical support to CDC’s VVPDB viral vaccine-preventable disease programs. The work spans surveillance system support, data quality and workflow improvement, statistical analysis, study operations, protocol/IRB support, joint publications, stakeholder communications, and outbreak/emergency response support.



Qualifications

Experience: 1 year experience interpreting/analyzing data using statistical software

Technical Skills:

  • Statistical software (SAS, R, SPSS, STATA, Python, etc.)
  • Data collection, cleaning, manipulation, visualization
  • Epidemiologic study design and analysis
  • Administrative and survey data analysis
  • Protocol and IRB support (knowledge, not prior gov access)
  • Microsoft Office Suites: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.

 

Primary Responsibilities (All Programs) - Across assigned VVPDB programs, the Epidemiologist III will:

  • Conduct epidemiologic studies aligned to public health mission.
  • Assemble, organize, and manage epidemiologic and laboratory data; ensure data quality/accuracy/completeness.
  • Improve data workflows and develop process improvements supporting epidemiologic and research activities.
  • Communicate with CDC staff and remote sites to ensure:
    • protocol compliance
    • secure data transfer and processing
  • Perform statistical analyses using packages such as SAS, SPSS, Epi-Info, R, or SUDAAN
    • Generate tables/figures suitable for presentation/publication.
  • Support analytic projects addressing key epidemiologic questions using survey/administrative datasets (examples listed in the PWS).
  • Support development of joint analyses/publications; co-author scientific papers and present at scientific meetings.
  • Provide day-to-day support, including responding to public phone/email inquiries.
  • Monthly Reporting.
  • Handling PII
  • Support emergency response activities for outbreaks/agency priorities (as applicable).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Program-Specific Duties - A) Measles, Rubella, and CMV Program

In addition to the core responsibilities, this role includes:

  • Support surveillance systems, including:
    • data ingestion
    • data merging
    • dashboard maintenance
    • posting dashboard content to a website

 

  • Attend conference calls with study sites and monthly coordinator/nurse calls (or other project calls); record meeting minutes.
  • Assist with protocol development and IRB submissions/revisions.
  • Provide analytical support to other VVPDB programs as needed (including Mumps, VZV, and other Herpes programs).

B) HPV Program

  • Attend/participate in:
    • site visits
    • scientific meetings
    • ad hoc meetings as needed to support/learn current activities
  • Statistical analysis and deliverables consistent with the broader epidemiology role requirements (SAS/SPSS/Epi-Info/R/SUDAAN; tables/figures; publications; inquiry response; emergency response; monthly reporting).

C) Mumps, Varicella Zoster Virus, and other Herpes Program (Epi Support)

  • Support activities related to Herpes/Zosters (HZ) surveillance and epidemiology research.
  • Develop analytic plans and execute analytic projects using administrative and electronic medical record data.
  • Disseminate HZ/HZ vaccine information via:
    • CDC Shingles webpage revisions
    • FAQs
    • presentations
    • publications
  • Provide analytical support to other programs (Measles/Mumps/Rubella).
  • Experience selecting appropriate statistical tests, implementing them, and interpreting results for public health research projects.
