Job Summary

Job Description

  • Interprets, analyzes, validates, and evaluates data using statistical computer programs.
  • Conducts routine data linkages and collaborates with the LDH Office of Technology Services, Vital Records, Bureau of Health Informatics (BHI), and DB Sysgraph to develop and enhance data systems, linkages, case identification, and case review related to assigned data systems and programs.
  • Manages confidentiality and security of data according to state and federal regulations.
  • Serves as resident data and evaluation expert for violence and injury surveillance by researching and identifying existing data sources used for, but not collected by, BFH. Assist with establishing appropriate data points in electronic medical records as needed.
  • Utilizes statistical software to obtain frequencies through univariate and bivariate analyses
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of appropriate interpretation and translation of epidemiologic results
  • Develops expertise in suicide and non-fatal suicide related outcomes, data sources, surveillance systems and analytics and oversees identification and validation of mortality cases for review processes.
  • Designs, develops and implements program evaluation efforts for suicide prevention interventions
  • Provides leadership over direct reports for design, implementation, data interpretation, program monitoring, and evaluation for maternal child health related program indicators and analysis plans.
  • Maintains and manages grant evaluation plans
  • Coordinates with Programs and the community to move data to action
  • Provides leadership for the overall reporting of Louisiana’s Comprehensive Suicide Plan’s indicators including fatal and non-fatal suicide related outcomes, ensuring data are analyzed and reported in a timely manner
  • Performs or oversees data entry, data editing, analyses, and evaluation in support of partner interventions
  • Provides technical assistance to other professionals in government, academia, health care, the community, and the private sector in multi-disciplinary projects and on community health planning teams.
  • Provides epidemiologic support on suicide related outcomes for state violence and injury advisory bodies and participate in meetings
  • Discusses and assists in resolving epidemiological issues with community leaders, health professionals and officials, lawyers, legislators, and peers.
  • Conducts suicide data updates at a minimum of once per year
  • Identifies opportunities for leveraging data to respond to and advance policy initiatives
  • Produces reports, data products, and publications
  • Works with team to identify opportunities to build self-serve analytics to make data more accessible to partners, community collaborators and the public. This may include, but is not limited to, interactive data dashboards, GIS maps, publications and reports, and fact sheets. Identifies resources needed to implement the recommendations and works with team leadership to implement.
  • Contributes to the public health evidence-base by authoring and/or presenting findings in peer reviewed journals and publications, at state and national conferences as approved, at meetings and webinars, and in evidence-based practice databases. Supports student workers and junior epidemiologists in preparing abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Provides all data and assist in the development and dissemination of Louisiana comprehensive suicide prevention reports, data and policy briefs,  other dissemination and communications efforts; and submission of competing and continuation applications
  • Coordinates with other epidemiologists on the response to internal and external data requests in coordination with the BFH DAT analytic section.
  • Conducts an annual performance evaluation for each subordinate, setting future goals and strategies.
  • Conducts recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and professional development of assigned staff.
  • Provides guidance to junior epidemiologists and student workers on development and refinement of program and project logic models, work plans, performance measurement and evaluation plans, including, but not limited to mandated performance reports and evaluation reports.
  • Conducts quality control review of subordinates work
  • Participates in webinars and routine TA calls with federal funders for assigned projects and programs, including national workgroups for suicide surveillance and analytics.
  • Participates in internal staff, project, and professional development meetings and trainings as requested or assigned.
  • Supports the coordination and management of Emergency Operations during activation and as needed between events.
  • Other tasks as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or Associate’s degree plus 3 years of professional experience, or 6 years of professional work experience
  • Minimum 4 years professional experience with qualitative data analysis.
  • Minimum 2 years professional experience in epidemiology.
  • Minimum 1 year professional supervisory experience.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills; effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Great attention to detail and follow up.
  • Ability to manage projects, assignments, and competing priorities.
  • Proficient in the use of Zoom, Teams, and Microsoft Office, including but not limited to Outlook, Word, and Excel.
     

DESIRED:

  • Advanced degree in Epidemiology.
  • Minimum 5 years professional experience with quantitative data analysis.
  • Minimum 3 years professional experience in epidemiology.
  • Minimum 2 year professional supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 2 years professional experience with statistical software packages (SAS, SPSS, Stata or R).
