Aging and Health Economics Research Manager

Full-time position with benefits to begin as soon as possible.

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) is the nation’s leading non-profit economic research organization. Since 1920, it has developed and disseminated impartial information on a wide range of issues that are important for public and private decision makers. It coordinates research by more than 1,800 economics professors at leading colleges, universities and business schools throughout North America.   

The NBER is seeking an Aging and Health Economics Research Manager to provide intellectual leadership and substantive coordination of grant funded Centers and Program Projects.  The Manager will work in conjunction with the Principal Investigators (“PIs”) on these grants, assisting in integrating substantive results in various reports and planning new research directions.  The Manager will serve as a liaison between the PIs, NBER staff members, and program officials at funding agencies.

This position is based in the NBER’s Cambridge, MA office and may be eligible for a combination of in person and remote work. Work arrangement options will be discussed during the hiring process.  This position reports to the NBER President and involves close collaboration with members of the Grants Administration team and other staff members.

Responsibilities include

Collaborating with PIs and program leaders in shaping research agendas and identifying promising directions for new initiatives.

Collaborating with NBER administrative staff in managing program activities.

Writing non-technical reports to summarize research findings from various projects.  

Assisting the PIs and other project leaders with program coordination, including regular communication with the research teams and consortium members about research progress and findings. Coordinating activities might include stimulating regular interactions among the projects’ researchers, supporting the dissemination and application of measurements and methods developed across projects, and facilitating the translation and dissemination of the projects’ research into evidence-based practices that are accessible to a wide range of audiences.

Assisting the PIs in developing and supporting innovative research projects from NBER-affiliated investigators and other qualified external researchers, and developing a pipeline of early career investigators through training programs and post-doctoral research initiatives.

Working with the NBER Communications team and outside consultants as appropriate on the development and implementation of a translation strategy for project findings.  

Collaborating with PIs, NBER staff, and outside consultants to recruit and support external steering committees and similar groups that may be associated with particular research grants.  

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in empirical economics and other scientific research methods, excellent writing and editorial skills and the ability to synthesize data both qualitatively and quantitatively, as well as excellent interpersonal communication skills for interactions with NBER staff at all levels, researchers, funding agency personnel, and administrative staff at collaborating institutions.  The candidate will also have organizational skills including follow-through and tracking of long-term projects and daily tasks and will be detail-oriented, flexible and precise. The ideal candidate will be willing to take on new responsibilities, with opportunities for career development and advancement. 

Required qualifications:

Master’s degree in Economics and 10+ years of relevant experience in health and aging economics research or other relevant experience. 

Salary level with be commensurate with experience.
