Job Duties

The Mount Rogers Health District is seeking an entry-level Epidemiologist to support public health surveillance, investigation, and prevention efforts across the district. This role may be based at either the Wythe County Health Department or the Smyth County Health Department. The successful candidate will assist with routine epidemiologic investigations, data collection and analysis, and the development of public health recommendations. They will also provide health education and consult with stakeholders on scientific and technical issues that support disease control and community health initiatives.

This position works under the close guidance of a senior epidemiologist and is ideal for someone looking to grow their skills in applied epidemiology. Work is reviewed for accuracy, adherence to program objectives, appropriate analytical methods, and the practicality of recommendations. This is a great opportunity for an early-career professional who is passionate about protecting community health and contributing to meaningful public health action.

**This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the Public Health Emergency Preparedness grant for period ending June 30, 2027.The availability of funding is scheduled for review before the grant expiration date and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.

Minimum Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of the cause, transmission, treatment, and prevention of communicable diseases and other conditions of public health importance.
• Basic knowledge of methods of public health surveillance and disease outbreak investigations.
• Working knowledge of biostatistics, computer data analysis, data quality assurance, and data management techniques.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and present statistical data.
• Some experience in epidemiology, public health, or a related area.

Additional Considerations

• Training/experience in public health, epidemiology or biostatistics.
• Some knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies regarding the reporting and control of disease.
• Working knowledge of statistical software packages.
• Experience with database management systems, especially those used to manage population-based disease data.
